Should I take Wing Chun Kung fu?

Is this a good martial art to take, and learn fast? I don't wanna take wrestling with all that mma stuff; I just want to be able to fend and defeat before the person gets me to the ground. Maybe Krav Maga... Suggestions????

Should I take Wing Chun Kung fu?

Reply:Apparently the 4 people who answered above me have little to say.

I can tell you that Wing Chun has been known in the past to be a very good art. It was created for street fighting and its original creator actually taught it to a woman so she could defeat a man in a fight. She won.

Any art can be good as long as you have a good teacher. People seem to assume (at least, people who have never taken a class and know little about fighting past what they see on TV) that certain martial arts have this amazing ability to make you an awesome fighter even if the teacher and training sucks.

People do not understand that the only way to get good at something is not by associating yourself with it simply, it is by working hard and practicing towards its perfection.

What am I trying to get at? Wing Chun is a very good art. but only if you are the student who is willing to work towards its mastery.

Every art has its strength and weaknesses, which is why after around spending 6 years in one art to get a good base, people begin to cross train. There is no one perfect style (despite your stereotypical redneck who watches UFC and seems to think that BJJ is the end all be all, yeah right.. try going to the ground when someone has friends on you in real life). After training in Wing Chun you may want to learn some grappling and perhaps a long range art such as Tae Kwon Do. Wing Chun is good because it already covers punching, close kicking, and trapping.
Reply:The answer above me is excellent... The only thing that I will add to it is that Wing Chun is possibly the best art that I have come accross as a base art, Krav is awesome for its training methods as is Systema... My advice would be to take Wing Chun until you have a decent understanding of the basics and then try to apply some of the training methods of Krav to Wing Chun... Also look into some grappling but don't get lost in it.
Reply:If you think it will work for you, try it.
Reply:Wing Chun is a great place to start. Bruce Lee thought so.
Reply:yes you should
