What do you think of Wing chun(wing tsun)?

I've studied Wing Chun since 1971 and have been lucky enough to be taught by some of the Greatest Wing Chun masters available. I've also trained in many different arts including Jeet Kune Do, MMA, BJJ and Muay Thai so I have a pretty decent knowledge of both sides of Wing Chun.

On the positive side, it has the ability to develop blistering speed in hand tools (blocks and strikes) within a relatively short time. In total contrast to what another poster said, it doesn't require you to be big and strong, in fact it was developed for those who WEREN'T big and strong. The original story was it was developed for a woman to use against a man and was named after the woman it was designed for (not named after the woman who developed it as most people say). It uses low level kicks which are by far the safest type to use on the street and direct, linear punches which use kinetics to increase impact power. It has comparatively few forms (three hand forms, two weapon and one dummy) and has a somewhat unique training exercise for developing sensitivity (reaction time and instinct) called chi sao (sticky hands).

It's short comings are that few instructors will include sparring as part of the training. Most will rely on chi sao and lap sao drills. It needs to be remembered that Wing Chun was developed to combat a specific martial arts style which was used by bandits in the area (Hung Kuen) and so has had to be developed to deal with modern day threats such as the boxer, grappler and kicker. Also, Yip Man trained very few students who learned the COMPLETE system from the Grandmaster. As a result, many of his original students did not learn the complete dummy form or the knife form in its entirety. This is one reason why you see several different variations on form from instructor to instructor.

In my experience there are several good lineages to chase up originating from Yip Man:

1. His sons Ip Chun and Ip Ching

2. Wong Shon Lung (top fighter of the WC style)

3. Duncan Leung (in the USA, a superb stylist and teacher)

4. Hawkins Cheung (LA)

5. Lok Yiu (Hong Kong)

There are also many I would stay away from!

Overall, WC is a superb martial art. Not faultless (no martial art is) but complete and, if taught well, VERY effective.

Hope that helps

It's good Bruce lee got taught this before Jet kune do by grand master Yip man himself.. Report It

Reply:I know there are a lot of fanatical fans of it, but personally it looks extremely difficult to pull off.
Reply:its kickass. its only effective if you are fast and strong and know the right moves. but if you are weak, and slow it just looks like your dusting them off.
Reply:Pretty awesome once you master the technique. You don't even need to see, you can still kick some butt.
Reply:i wouldn't fight a stand up wing chun fighter, maybe kick a bit but those people know how to TRAP

what i would mainly go for is a take down

wing chun is nice overall i'd like to try it out sometime, the trapping interests me.

goodbye sir
Reply:its excelent for people who take boxing and mauy thai.

it increases you r speed like nothing else and it improves your aim/targets hit and hand eye coordination.

also conditions your forearms and fists.
Reply:its ok but there are heaps of flaws in it and the stance is pretty crap . toooooo much thinking and forms and theory for my likeing
Reply:I've taken wing chun previously and there are huge advantages with the art, but like some have said, there are also flaws. Wing chun is great in the trapping range when you are close to your opponent. There are a lot of intricate hand movements that takes time to practice and master. Above all else, it will greatly improve your reaction time and hand/eye coordination. Obviously, if you are fighting an opponent in a different range such as the kicking range or on the ground, your techniques are limited. Your best bet is to train in a variety of martial art systems that will allow you to adapt to any fighting situation.
Reply:Its an effective system.
Reply:Wing Chun is the most effective system which uses simultaneously attack and defence, also Wing Chun strengthen your punches and generally speaking is the best martial art of all!!!!!! You punch straight and there is no loss of time. In Wing Chun is used the simplicity and the effectiveness.:)
