Which martial art is best for me ? tai chi, kung fu or wing chun?

how to see a good instructor because that's more important. i myself like chinese style they have style , it's more like an art you know i don't like karate cause it seems to be too much violent i wanna do martial art to strengten my body, gain self-esteem, control my spirit....

Which martial art is best for me ? tai chi, kung fu or wing chun?
Hi there

I would probably go for wing chun or jeet kune do unless you can find a instructor that teaches real tai chi and not the watered down version that exists today.

The other versions of kung fu such as lau gar and variants of shaolin will seem similar to karate as that's where most of the basic techniques of karate come from.

But only you can decide. seek out local instructors and have a week trying them all and then pick the one that speaks to you.

Reply:I'm trying kung fu and I just do it to relax..

try it out.
Reply:If you live by the sword, and that's essentially what it is; you die by it. Jeet Kune Do or what use to be Jun Fan Kung Fu.
Reply:if you like all of them equally then like you said, what's more important is a good teacher

something in looking at a good teacher is his personality. If he's nice and not too strict. Also if he's won world championships and stuff like that it doesn't mean he's a good teacher.

the easiest way is to ask the students what they think
Reply:tai chi and wing chun are forms of kung fu, every form of martial arts a violent, martial arts means war art, kung fu may look pretty and graceful but are really violent and some times deadly, and they all offer the benifits you are looking for, go to a class or 2 and watch the instuctor demeanor, you will gain what he has to offer positive or negative, good luck
Reply:what art is for you is unfortunately not a question we can answer. In order for you to do what you say you want, it has to be a style that works for you, that speaks to you. Only you can decide that. But as you said, a good teacher is really important. What I would suggest is that you visit some of the schools in the area, watch how the classes are taught, how the teacher interacts with his students, what emphasis he places on the martial and what on the internal, meditative, chi work. a good balance is very important. I'm lucky because my teacher knows that the internal is equally as ( if not more) important than if you can beat someone to a pulp. But if what and how they are teaching doesn't make you go "yeah, I want to learn that!" Then maybe look at another art or at least another teacher.
Reply:Tai Chi and Wing Chun are type of Kung Fu, some Chinese people call them Wu Shu also, they're Chinese Martial Arts. If you just want to fitness, I think Tai Chi will be ok; if you looking for something like self defense, I will go with Wing Chun.
Reply:In your case after reading your question i think you should do some traditional kung fu style. since you appreciate learning it as an artform with the surrounding benefits. they usually comes with traditional weapons training, or even lion dances(improves physical agility, flexibility, etc.,) if you're into that as well. You should find a good school with a good instructor(w/ a clear traceable lineage) in your area so you know you're learning the right thing. All kungfu (except modern day wushu) was originally founded for martial art purposes.

It's hard to find a good taichi teacher that knows the martial art aspects nowadays. and wing chun is mainly for self-defence purposes (doesn't have the whole "artform" aspect like other kungfu styles, don't stress on body strengthening, but very practical for self defence) so maybe it's not what you're looking for.
Reply:yeah well what ever floats your boat mate but i think you need to broaden your horizons a bit and not restrict yourself to the ones youv'e mentioned.
Reply:Study up on these which you find interesting and then the one you really enjoy culture-disipline wise, find a Kwoon nearby and check out a few classes, and talk to Sifu. See if it is somewhere you would want to study, then choose one to go to. But If you go to a real Chinese Martial Arts School you will have to ask to be admitted.

peace,
