Is Wing Chun a good martial art to learn for street self defense?
Iv'e been doing MA for 39 years and i've never heard that hard syles of MA are only good for attack and fighting?

any martial art that you make a lifestyle out of and stick to is good whether it be for self defense or whatever.you dont need to swallow a dictionary and a bucket of b/**** to give a good answer.
Reply:if you want to learn a ART yes but, if want street skills Take boxing for 6 months and learn to wrestle
Reply:I've taken many martial arts. I think Muay Tai is the best for street fighting. I never took it but I got my *** kicked by someone who did.
Reply:I'm not a WC practitioner, but I know that is a fine Martial Art. It's where Bruce Lee started.
Reply:Wing chun was included as part of my training along with a couple of other Kung Fu Styles back in the 70's. I will say that it has proved effective for me over the years...but then I was trained specifically to use it in self defense situations. IF you can find an instructor that will teach the practical self defense aspects it is quite efective...if not....then...well...better to find a school that stresses the practical self defense applicaitons, even if its not in a style you were looking for...
Reply:Muay thai, brazillian jiu jitsu, some kick boxing, or maybe krav maga (more of a real world self defense art). You train in any one of those for a year and you could kick a 7 year wang chung kung fu poser's *** easily. Just watch the first couple or UFC tournaments. Just about every martial art discipline fought against each other. I can tell you that there were no successful kung fu guys. I'm not saying wang chun will not help you at all, but it will give you a false sense of security which will get your *** kicked some day.
Reply:You must appreciate the difference between soft and hard stiles. A soft stile, like Wing Chun is more about bringing your body into a state of focus and health. Where as hard stiles are purely for attack and defense. Yes, both schools teach aspects of each other, but there focus is in two different places. The Russian martial art ( Sorry but cant remember the name of it at the moment, i think its Kempo or Sambo) is the most affective street fighting stile I have seen. It was devised by there military and is a blend of the most brutal stiles world wide.
